Conn Take pArt Gallery
In conjunction with the current spring exhibitions, AMSET is proud to present a new installation in the Conn TakepART Gallery featuring the watercolor sketches of Fort Worth-based artist Billy Hassell and two newly acquired works by Oaxaca-based artist Carlomagno Pedro Martinez.
Billy Hassell is always on the move, traveling all over the state of Texas to seek out new and beautiful landscapes. Hassell begins his artistic process by painting and sketching these locations into small, hand-held sketchbooks. He then returns to his studio in Fort Worth to use these sketches as backdrops for the incredible prints, paintings, and sculptures he makes of Texas wildlife. Hassell's work is currently on display in the main galleries until June 19, 2022, as part of the exhibition, Billy Hassell: Topography.
Carlomagno Pedro Martinez lives in San Bartolo Coyotepec, Oaxaca, Mexico, and creates incredibly detailed sculptures. Using clay he digs out of his local riverbed, Martinez hand-builds each figurine and fires his sculptures using an oxygen reduction method that creates a smoky black surface. Martinez's sculptural installations combine Mexican history, local mythology and symbolism into rich narratives that evoke the splendor and mystery of Mexico's culture and heritage. Martinez's work is currently on display in the main galleries until March 12, 2023, as part of the exhibition Collecting a Master, Carlomagno Pedro Martinez from the John Gaston Fairey Collection of Mexican Folk Art.
